Sonamgang Primary School
Sonamgang Primary School is a welcoming learning community in Phuentsholing, Bhutan, committed to nurturing confident, compassionate and capable young learners. Rooted in Bhutanese values and culture, the school provides a supportive and inclusive environment where every child is encouraged to learn, grow and serve.
Established in 2013 through a partnership between the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India, Sonamgang has evolved to serve the changing educational needs of its community. Today, the school embraces inclusive education through its Special Educational Needs (SEN) Programme, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, participate and thrive.

Our Timeline
Sonamgang School is Established
Sonamgang School was initially constructed as a Lower Secondary School in 2013. It was formally opened on 16 July 2013 through a close partnership between the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India.
Upgraded to Middle Secondary School
In the following year, the school was upgraded to a Middle Secondary School to help ease admission pressure in other schools. Mr. Dorji Tshering became the school's first Principal.
Consecration & Inauguration
The school was consecrated by His Holiness Venerable Tsugla Lopen Rimpoche and inaugurated by Mr. Jitender Kumar Sharma, Consul General, Consulate of India, Phuentsholing.
From Dhamdara to Sonamgang
Locally known as Dhamdara, the school received its present name, Sonamgang, from His Holiness Trulku Jigme Choeda, the 70th Je Khenpo of Bhutan.
A School in the Heart of Phuentsholing
Sonamgang is beautifully located on a gentle slope overlooking Phuentsholing town. The school shares its northern boundary with Phuentsholing General Hospital and its south-western boundary with the Food Corporation of Bhutan. It is approximately 1 km from the gateway of Bhutan.
A New Chapter: Primary School
As part of the country's education restructuring and the initiative to redefine schools, Sonamgang was downgraded to a Primary School with a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Programme.
New Leadership
Mr. Tshewang took over as the school's second Principal, beginning a new chapter in the school's journey of growth, inclusion and service.
Growing Together
Today, Sonamgang School continues its commitment to nurturing every learner. The school now serves 1,021 children, including 50 children with Special Educational Needs, reflecting its commitment to inclusive education.
