Nestled on a gentle hillside overlooking Phuentsholing, Sonamgang Primary School is a vibrant learning community dedicated to providing quality education in a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment. Originally established as a Lower Secondary School in 2013, Sonamgang has continually evolved to meet the educational needs of Bhutan. Today, as a Primary School with a Special Educational Needs (SEN) programme, we remain committed to delivering holistic education that prepares every learner for lifelong success.
Sonamgang Primary School was constructed in 2013 as a Lower Secondary School through the close partnership between the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India. The school officially opened on 16 July 2013 with 968 students and 36 teachers.
In 2014, the school was upgraded to a Middle Secondary School to ease enrolment pressure in neighbouring schools. It was consecrated by His Holiness Venerable Tsugla Lopen Rinpoche and inaugurated by Mr. Jitender Kumar Sharma, Consul General of India in Phuentsholing.
The name “Sonamgang” was bestowed by His Holiness Trulku Jigme Choeda, the 70th Je Khenpo of Bhutan. Locally known as Dhamdara, the school enjoys a picturesque location approximately one kilometre from the Phuentsholing Gate, sharing its boundaries with Phuentsholing General Hospital and the Food Corporation of Bhutan.
In 2023, as part of Bhutan’s national education reform, the school was restructured into Sonamgang Primary School with a Special Educational Needs (SEN) programme, continuing its commitment to inclusive and quality education under the leadership of Principal Mr. Tshewang.
